Chili – The hot berry

They shine in different colors and have different sizes, but one thing they have in common: They pep up the food. I`d even say they are hellish hot.

Generally we talk about the chili pepper or chili pod. Botanically chili and pepper is a fruit, to be more precise a berry by the genus capsicum.

Here in the Algarve the hot berry belongs to the local menu. Often we smell the wonderful aroma of grilled chicken in the streets and lanes. The grilled chicken gets spiced with a good quantity of piripiri (chili) and then served as the famous “Frango Piripiri”.

Its effect

An essential question is if the spiciness of chili is beneficial for our health?

The active substance capsaicin has an anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic effect on our health. And not to forget it even has an appetite restraining effect. The intake of this active substance is not only possible while eating it. Surprisingly it is available as creams and patches. These have a positive impact on the blood flow, a healing effect for skin disease, and eases muscle pain.

“The use of chili has a long standing tradition and a positive effect on our health.”

What the history tells

Already the old Greeks knew about chilies positive impact on health. It was used as aphrodisiac. The name is derived from the Greek goddess for love, Aphrodite. In those days high prices were obtained with the hot berry.

In the medieval time the trend continued. The hot spice was added to many salty and sweet recipes. Also in our days the red powder has found its way to exotic sweet desserts. Even several chocolate manufacturer like to add some capsaicin to dark chocolate.

We have learned that chili has a long standing tradition and a positive effect on our health. Therefore why not make more often use of the hot berry in its most various ways?
